Carmen began singing in the school chorus and church choir at six. Growing up immersed in the grunge/alternative rock of the 90s, her earliest musical influences included Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, and Tori Amos. At 13, after discovering her mother's vinyl collection, Carmen discovered classic rock of the 60s and 70s and major influences Joni Mitchell and Led Zeppelin. At 19, Carmen packed up her passion for music and an upright piano and moved from Los Angeles to San Diego, determined to find the songs inside her. She taught herself to play piano and the songs swiftly came. In June 2009, Carmen took down her shoebox of cassette tapes filled with songs and by August 2010, she recorded a 4-song demo called Years. In September 2011, Carmen released her debut album, The Hive. Carmen delivers each song with a distinct and colorfully versatile voice. Carmen's compositions are hauntingly beautiful. She describes herself as a girl singing her songs hoping to touch people's hearts while she tries to get free. www.carmencaserta.com www.wijsf.org
